The name Anguilla originated from the word eel.
It might probably be because the shape of the island resembles an eel’s shape.

Based on ancient history, the first tribe who migrated to Anguilla was the Amerindians of South America. Some sources claim that Columbus discovered the island in 1943 although the date remains uncertain until now.

The first English colony of Anguilla came in 1650 from Saint Kitts. Other colonies came from different parts of Europe such as Antigua and Barbados. It was confirmed by historians that the Europeans brought African slaves in the region during the 17th century.

Later on, England took administration of the island until the early 19th century. The United Kingdom incorporated it into a single British dependency along with Saint Kitts and Nevis in spite of the fact that what they did is against the wishes of the inhabitants of Anguilla.

Anguillas soil is not suitable for agriculture and the land has a very few base for natural resources, but what it could boast of is that it is recognized for its spectacular coral reefs which are ecologically important.
